"Family is so important" is Ike's overriding conviction, as he seeks to learn dance far away from his brother Cliff's dance school as a means to an end. However, this "family" diminishes under his control through complicated rituals. As they challenge each other, various actors emerge, each seeking their place, becoming a plaything or a dance partner, only to be dismissed or disappear. Even a fall into an ice-cold lake or a deer can't deter Ike from his path. Marko is repeatedly the center of attention. When the dance school suddenly goes up in flames, Cliff suspects his brother. Ike, who can't dance, stays true to his surprising plan and leaves the once beloved home of the unsuccessful dance teacher with Cliff in the infamous Chevrolet. He is drawn to the south and to Klara.
