German theatre runs from the long-established Stadttheater to the independent scene and the Kleinkunst stages, taking in drama, storytelling theatre, puppetry and work well outside the classical repertoire.

The season usually runs from autumn to early summer, with premieres at the start and revivals spread across the year. Smaller houses often play only a handful of dates per production.
